Back In The Saddle, With A New Crew Member!

It’s been 7 months since our last boat trip, but we’re back out for our first annual Memorial Day Boat Trip!  This time we’re exploring South Puget Sound, which is something I’ve never done, despite sailing Puget Sound for over 30 years.  This boat trip is special because our au pair, Katherine, just arrived from Colombia last week.  Her English is rough, but she’s improving every day, and she’s a real trooper when it comes to getting a job done and trying new things.  So, we were thrilled that she wanted to join us on this trip.  What’s even more exciting is that it’s her first time on a boat!  She seems to be enjoying herself, despite some mild seasickness (and we’ve since learned the Spanish word “mareado” for seasickness), and hopefully she’ll be joining us on many more adventures!

We started off our trip on Thursday evening, at our favorite port, Kirkland.   We slept on the boat at our home port the first night, then woke up for an 8:30 a.m. start in the morning.

 Friday morning, we made our way through the locks.  We got right into the small locks, and went smoothly through.   

          Then we headed out into the Sound.  Unfortunately, there wasn’t much wind, so we took a long motor south to Point Defiance.  We were suprised by the number of uprooted trees we came across floating just below the surface.

 

We were thrilled to find plenty of room at the guest dock, and we pulled in just in time to get dinner started and watch a movie.  The ferry was much closer than I expected, but it was quiet and stopped running at 10PM anyway.  

We had a nice first evening at Point Defiance before adventuring to the zoo in the morning!
