Bishop Bay to Kumealeon
Our morning at Bishop Bay was Lazy, eventually we pulled anchor and headed out of the bay and around Grinnell Island looking for the scenic walled cliffs mentioned in the Waggonner Guide. It was misty and cloudy however so we didn’t see anything resembling the cool forested holes in the walls that the guide had talked about.
We slowed down and trolled for salmon at two different locations, hooking one decent sized salmon in the first spot but he got away once we got him to the surface.
After giving up on fishing we motored up Grenville Channel to Lowe Inlet and dropped our anchor right in front of the Verney Falls, in 25 feet of water, in the outflowing current. The current kept our boat pointed perfectly at the falls and we never swung around. It felt strange having the water flowing by constantly but we were secure.
Devon dropped the crab trap before dinner and 90 minutes later when I pulled it up there were two Dungeness, one a keeper! So we dangled him in the trap from the stern for the night and headed to bed.
In the morning, Devon dropped the crab trap again and later picked up 2 smallish crabs, borderline size so we let them go and re-set the trap.
We stayed on the boat all day, working on a few creative projects. I fired up the genset for charging and tested the Xbox with no Internet finding that Minecraft surprisingly worked (first time since our Poulsbo debacle. So, the girls got to play Xbox Minecraft for a couple hours. While they did that I finally got started on re-implementing the Raspberry Pi marine computer. I found most of the parts and booted it up. Unfortunately, I could not find the USB hard drive that contains the Wikipedia and Khan Academy content. I happened to download more recent Wikipedia databases to my movie hard drive before we moved out of the house, so I could copy those to the Raspberry Pi’s USB stick and get that going.
After some fiddling (with no Internet to do research with) I got MobertPedia fired up, hosting Wikipedia and some TED Business and TED Technology videos that we can now use without Internet. Khan Academy also works; however, the videos are on the missing hard drive so we can’t use it. Oh well, still decent progress.
The night ended with dishes and Princess Bride.
The next morning we motored out of Lowe Inlet, picking up our crab pot on the way, and moved north.
We made a fairly short run to Kumealon Inlet for the night where we were treated to a sighting of the elusive BC coastal wolf, marking his territory on the beach after one of the crew took their dog ashore for a potty break. We jigged for halibut off the boat but all we caught was one rockfish that pooped all over me while I attempted to release him. Gross! s/v Zepher rafted up to m/v Lioness and the two hosted a very fun happy hour, during which Phil from Lioness got the kids making their own ice cream in bags with ice. They had a blast! In the morning we head to Dundas Island, just one day from Ketchikan!.
