Over the Threshold!

Now that we know we can afford this (kind of), I’m getting very excited to get this project off the ground.  Unfortunately, there will be a lot of “hurry up and wait” going on over the next few years while we save up.

The other thing that’s changed since we figured out that financing this trip actually was within the realm of possibilities?  The idea of telling our family and friends about our plans.  At first it was terrifying: What if we told everyone and then didn’t have enough money?  Those aren’t questions you want to answer.  But now, I’m excited to start sharing the adventure.  Except of course at work – that can wait.

To that end, we told our parents about our plans, and those conversations went well.  My parents have always been sailors, and their reaction was – well, less of a reaction than I thought.  They were supportive, which is wonderful, but they took the news as though we’d told them we were running to the grocery store.  Which, actually, was kind of nice.  It’s nice to realize this isn’t that big of a deal.  People do it every day.  I’m actually quite surprised my own parents never did with our family.

The conversation with my husband’s parents also went well.  My husband’s Second Dad (some might say stepdad) was supportive and excited.  His mom is a little nervous, and understandably so.  But, I must give her huge props for not raining on our parade.  She kept her cool, and we now have five years to help her get used to the idea, right?

I can’t help but be thankful for all the support we’ve received so far, just in initial conversations.  It helps build my confidence to know that same support will be there when the more difficult challenges arrive.  So thank you to all our friends and family!
