Barkley Sound Day 4 – A day of rest, sort of…
Well we woke up in Victoria still, made some coffee, and got moving a bit. Last night I noticed one of my coworkers was in town with his family so we messaged each other and they stopped by the dock around 9:30am on their way home via the Coho ferry. After catching up a bit, we headed up to town and decided to try Frankie’s Modern Diner for breakfast. The $5 Mimosa’s sign may have contributed to that choice. The food was pretty good, though they put granola on top of pancakes and things, which contained nuts and seeds which in the end meant Devon couldn’t eat her pancakes. After breakfast the kids were looking for spiral notebooks and a playground so they went off to do that while I went back to the boat to try and work on the SSB radio and other projects. While I was doing that I could hear the Pride Parade going on all around as it passed by the Parliament Building and The Empress that both wrapped around the marina.
I managed to finish up the antenna wiring in the aft locker in time to crash the private dock party for the Vic-Maui that started up around 3pm. $15/person to get in to the Vic-Maui dock party but oh well, free wine, beer, and mai-tais, chips, and tapas. We took the girls inside Crossfire, a 55ft custom race boat from Seattle, so they could see what it looked like, and they got to try out the grinders in the cockpit. I also walked over to see Longboard, a Riptide 35 that won fastest time in the last race, an amazing feat considering it’s one of the, if not the smallest boat in the fleet. It’s also the newest Riptide model from Paul Bieker at only about 2 years old.
After that we went back to the boat and Devon started dinner while I worked on the SSB a bit more. I managed to get it fully connected and ready with just the power connections left when dinner was ready. Flank Steak, Risotto, and Asparagus. Then the kids went to bed and I powered off the boat for 5 minutes to connect power to the SSB.
Then it was time for bed because tomorrow is going to be a super long day. We have about 100nm to go to get to our first stop in Barkley Sound, 12 to 15 hours expected.
